The Department of Sports & Youth Affairs in collaboration with the Sikkim Chess Association organized the North East States Online Chess Tournament 2020 which is the first of its kind in the North East with total prize money of Rs. 50,000.00 (Rupees Fifty Thousand) only. In this Tournament, 185 players from the eight north-eastern states participated. The tournament was officially inaugurated by Sports & Youth Affairs Minister, Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha on 29th May 2020.
The inaugural program was conducted in the Webinar and also joined by All India Chess Federation secretary, Shri Bharat Singh Chauhan, South Asian Chess Council deputy president, Shri Dharmendra Kumar, presidents and general secretaries of different chess association of north-eastern states, Grand Masters Shri Prabin Thipsay, President of Sikkim Olympic Association, Secretary and officers of Sports and Youth Affairs Department. The tournament was played on the Lichess App platform. The message of Shri V. Anand sent to the Sports and Youth Affairs Department was read out in the Webinar.
