Mangan, 15 Aug (IPR): North Sikkim celebrated the 74th Independence Day 2020 with great patriotism and zeal at DAC complex Mangan.
Chief Guest, Shri Samdup Lepcha Area MLA-cum- Minister for Roads and Bridges Department, Cultural Affairs and Heritage Department unfurled the national flag at the backdrop of the national anthem rendered by the students. This was followed by the presentation of Guard of Honour by the police personnel.
As per national guidelines on the Independence Day Celebration issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, this year the celebration was held on a smaller scale with limited invitees, but with the same zeal, enthusiasm and patriotism as it is celebrated every year duly following all the Covid-19 safety guidelines.
Addressing the gathering, chief guest, Shri Lepcha congratulated and extended his warmest greetings and best wishes to the people of Sikkim and fellow countrymen on the glorious 74th Independence Day. He paid rich homage to those leaders and freedom fighters who had sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country.
In his short speech, he reiterated about how India got independent from British colonial rule on this very day. He also said that we cannot celebrate in a grand manner like before because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He thanked frontline warriors, police departments, health departments, safai karmachari, and to all the general public who have been working restlessly to make North Sikkim as a COVID-19 free zone.
At last Hon’ble Minister requested the general public to follow the government guidelines and to wear a face mask, use hand sanitizer, and more importantly maintain social distancing to keep coronavirus at bay.
Meanwhile, the Independence Day Message of the Governor and the Chief Minister was read out by District Magistrate, Shri Tenzing T. Kaleon, and ADC, North, Shri Sonam Lepcha, respectively.
On the very day, the Independence day celebration committee felicitated the COVID-19 warriors of Health, Police, and Safaikarmachari for their active roles in combating the corona pandemic.
Similarly, the 74th Independence Day was also celebrated in a grand manner at Kabi, Passingdong and Chungthang.
In Kabi, Minister for Forest and Environment, Mines & Geology and Science & Technology Department, Shri Karma Loday Bhutia, graced the day as chief guest while Shri Sonam Tshering Venchungpa, Chairman was present at Chungthang as the chief guest. Shri Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, MLA Dzongu constituency attended the 74th Independence Day Celebration at Passingdang as chief guest.
