Gangtok, July 22: The Sikkim Olympic Association heartily welcomes the announcement made by the State Government for medal winners in Olympics viz Rs 2.50 Cr for gold, Rs1.50 Cr for silver and 1.00 Cr bronze.
The announcement brings cheers not only to athletes but also to all the sporting associations, coaches, parents and sports lovers as a whole. Sikkim Olympic Association expresses gratitude to Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang and Hon’ble Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Department Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha.
The various interventions by the government in the field of games and sports as Infrastructure development, inter School-competitions and participation in National School games after a gap of 14 years, sporting activities by Panchayati Raj Institutions, junior Olympics, talent search programme, Coaches development programme, incentives to medal winners in North East and national and international championships, talent search and development of club culture in the state are all directed to bring Olympic movement in the state. The Sporting Associations now receive grants in aid regularly. The job reservation in sports quota has been enhanced from 2% to 5%. which will motivate our youngsters to take games and sports as a profession.
Sikkim has produced only two Olympians so far – 1) Shri Jaslal Pradhan, Arjuna Awardee in Boxing and 2) Padma Shree Tarundeep Rai and also Arjuna Awardee. With the holistic development and approach, the Association hopes that the state athletes achieve to reach the Olympic podium in the upcoming Olympics of 2024, 2028 and 2032.
Sikkim Olympic Association also extends best wishes and luck to Indian Contingent for Tokyo Olympics 2020. ‘May the almighty give strength to Shri Tarundeep Rai to achieve medals in Tokyo Olympics’, states the President.
