Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), Sikkim Chapter held a press conference

Gangtok, August 13(IPR): Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), Sikkim Chapter held a press conference, here at the conference hall of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department in Paljor Stadium, today, with regard to the celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav-India @ 75 in the State of Sikkim.

The press conference was addressed by State Director, Sikkim NYKS, Shri Sibasis Banerjee, and Director (M&C), PIB Gangtok, Shri Ajay Mhamia.

It was informed that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as a part of the celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav is organising ‘Fit India Freedom Run 2.0’ throughout the country from today and will conclude on 2nd October 2021. The campaign aims to encourage people to take up fitness activities such as running and sports in their daily lives and achieve freedom from obesity, stress, anxiety and other diseases.

Accordingly, Sikkim NYKS under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will be organising the ‘Freedom Run’ throughout the State covering 75 villages in each district stated Director-Sikkim NYKS, Shri Banerjee.

He added that in Sikkim, the Fitness Run is scheduled to be held on 14th and 15th August at Namchi for South Sikkim, 21st August at Gyalshing for West Sikkim, 28th August at Mangan for North Sikkim and on 4th September at Gangtok for East district.

Director, PIB Gangtok, Shri Ajay Mhamia, has called on people from all walks of life across different villages to join the run and contribute to making it a people’s movement. He urged all to make a resolve to include physical activity of any form for at least 30 minutes daily in their lives for developing the fitness culture in the State.

He informed that elaborate arrangements have been made in coordination with the District Administrations in all districts and further added that Youth Clubs have been requested to reach out to the citizens at the village level to create awareness and motivate their active participation in the event.

It may be recalled here that the ‘Fit India Freedom Run’ was conceived last year in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic when social distancing became the ‘new normal’ lifestyle. In order to keep the imperative need of fitness activities while following the social distancing norms, Fit India Freedom Run was launched on the concept of virtual run whereby one can run anywhere, anytime on a route of their choice at a time that suits them best.

It was also informed that the Hon’ble Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, and Hon’ble Minister of State, Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Nisith Pramanik, flagged off the Fit India Freedom Run 2.0 from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi today. The nationwide programme has been launched at 75 historical locations and will conclude on 2nd October.
