SPCB Conducts Training for Waste Audit
Gangtok, September 24: The State Pollution Control Board – Sikkim in coordination with GMC and Central Pollution Control Board conducted training of volunteers for undertaking a survey of single-use plastics at Martam, East Sikkim on 24th September 2021. The training was imparted to volunteers who will be undertaking field and market surveys of selected wards under different local bodies of the State to assess the availability and use of single-use plastics.
This exercise will be taken up over a period of more than one year to gauge the impact of the ban that has been imposed on certain single-use plastics with effect from next year by the recent amendment to the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The surveys will be taken up in the solid wastes generated from selected wards of urban local bodies and sixteen panchayat wards designated as model panchayats for the management of solid wastes. It is also proposed to take up the same exercise in few tourist areas of the State.
The resource persons were drawn from the multi-disciplinary committee consisting of State Government officers from UDD, RDD, SPCB, and GMC as well as NGOs WWF, ECOSS, VHA. Shri Ritesh Gurung of CPCB Regional Directorate Shillong also took part in the deliberations as a resource person.
